Phoenix Leicester South Elevation

Focus Consultants is celebrating the news that Phoenix in Leicester is to receive £4 million of National Lottery money invested by Arts Council England towards its expansion and development plans.

Phoenix 2020 will create a two-storey extension to the current building in Midland Street in the city’s Cultural Quarter, to include two new cinemas and a better, more accessible digital art gallery with an atrium. The café bar area will be extended, additional toilets added, and improvements made to some existing spaces at the venue. It will also have a green roof terrace.

Focus Consultants is the project manager for the exciting £7 million development.

Partner at Focus Consultants, Steven Fletcher, said: “This is great news for Phoenix in Leicester. As a company, Focus Consultants has been supporting the charity as it developed its plans and the bid for National Lottery money, and we are delighted to hear that it has been confirmed that Arts Council England will invest £4 million of National Lottery money towards Phoenix 2020.

“Focus has worked with a range of arts and leisure venues nationally, and in Leicester, and we’re very pleased that the city is on course to receive an additional boost to its entertainment scene.”

Leicester City Council has also pledged £1 million for the development, which has already been given planning permission. Phoenix – Leicester’s centre for independent cinema, art and digital culture – is working hard to secure the final investment needed for work to start on site later this year.

The £4 million grant is part of Arts Council’s Capital funding programme. This money comes from the National Lottery and is designed to ensure companies and venues have the buildings and equipment they need to provide great artistic and cultural experiences to their local communities. One of just a few regional centres in the UK specialising in digital culture and creativity, Phoenix engages communities in diverse areas across Leicester and Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire, through digital arts, film making and community cinema.

Leicester Arts Centre Limited (Phoenix) is also an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation and over 2018-22 will receive £80,464 each year to support its digital art programme.

Architects Arcadis, working with Phoenix, drew up the plans for the development.
