Focus were appointed to undertake the BREEAM assessment and a number of related sustainability services of the new accommodation block, known as Glenart Castle Mess. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation sets high targets regarding the sustainability of its built assets, with Glenart Castle Mess being no exception. A target of BREEAM ‘Excellent’ was set early on in the scheme’s design brief and development.

A rating of ‘Excellent’ requires the building to perform to sustainability standards far surpassing those of UK Building Regulations. Meeting these standards was ensured through consistent and proactive engagement with the design team to ensure credit requirements were met at all stages. Regular consultation with the design team as well as regular reporting on progress meant that all members in the team felt engaged in the process making meeting the ‘Excellent’ target more streamlined and effective.

The project achieved BREEAM certification to an ‘Excellent’ standard within the necessary timescales at both design and post construction stages. This allowed the main contractor, developer and end user alike to exemplify the high standard of sustainability achieved.
