Innovative Design and Improved Infrastructure: Championing and implementing innovative design principles and technologies from energy-efficient systems and renewable energy sources to systems that can improve stormwater management or enhance air quality.

Energy Efficiency: Designing smart building technologies and utility systems, encouraging the use of energy modelling tools and conducting energy assessments. By designing energy-efficient buildings and retrofitting existing structures, they can contribute to reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Public Awareness and Education: Engage in outreach activities such as public speaking events, workshops, and educational programs to inspire young girls and women to pursue careers in engineering as vital contributors to the construction sector. By sharing their expertise and experiences, they can empower female engineers to contribute to a more positive future.

Collaboration and Advocacy: Join professional organisations and industry groups and actively participate in shaping guidelines and regulations. Through collaboration and advocacy, they can drive positive change in the industry and influence decision-making processes.

At Focus we want to be pro-active in encouraging more women and young girls to enter the field, and to assist in:

Early Exposure and Education: Provide opportunities for girls to explore engineering through hands-on activities, workshops, and mentorship programs. Encourage participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs both in and outside of school. Promote the visibility of women in our industry as role models and highlight their achievements. Focus are currently working with I Can Be, a charity that seeks to widen aspirations and break down barriers for Primary School girls.

Challenging Stereotypes: Encourage girls to pursue their interests in engineering, regardless of societal expectations. Promote engineering as a field where they can excel and make significant contributions.

Providing a Supportive Learning Environment: Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment in schools and universities who provide mentoring programs, scholarships, and networking opportunities specifically targeted towards women in engineering. Offer resources and support to address any challenges or barriers they may face.

Industry Engagement: Foster collaboration between educational institutions and industry partners to provide real-world exposure and experiences for aspiring women engineers. Organise industry visits, internships, and cooperative education programs to help women gain practical experience and understand the career opportunities available in engineering. Focus operatives have been meeting with local universities to explore employability and future partnerships to support engineering students to use their skills within our own core disciplines.

Female Role Models and Mentorship: Highlight successful female employees as role models and mentors. Establish mentorship programs where we can provide guidance, support, and advice to aspiring engineers. Seeing successful women in the field can inspire and motivate young women to pursue engineering and related careers.

Networking and Professional Development: Encourage women engineers to participate in professional organisations, conferences, and networking events. These platforms provide opportunities for skill development, knowledge sharing, and building networks. Support attendance at these events through funding or sponsorship.

Recognition and Visibility: Celebrate the achievements and contributions of women engineers through awards, media coverage, and public recognition. This recognition helps to break stereotypes and inspire other women to pursue careers with engineering at their heart.
