As we continue our 30 Years in 30 Days campaign, we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on Jasmine Chell-Wallis, a Consultant within our CREATE team at the Nottingham office.

Jasmine has quickly become an integral part of the Focus team since joining us in January 2020. We are incredibly proud to have supported her journey from Graduate to Consultant, watching her excel in her role with the CREATE team. Her dedication and passion for her work, along with her expertise in consultation and engagement development, have made her an invaluable member of the team.

BACKGROUND:

Jasmine is an experienced postgraduate professional who joined Focus after the completion of her Masters in Public History and Heritage. She has an established record of working on a wide range of projects across the Focus teams, from masterplanning and options studies to audience development and business planning. Jasmine is often responsible for leading consultation and engagement development across projects, given her proficiency in this field. She is a Consultant within the CREATE team and is based at the Nottingham office.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS:

• Working towards achieving Associateship for the Museums Association (AMA), a professional development programme that provides a flexible way to become a well-rounded museum professional.
• Supporting the ongoing development of the CREATE department, with a focus on the Cultural Services aspect of the organisation.
• Guest lecturing at the University of Derby to help students professionally contextualise the application of audience development and evaluation and being featured on their course page for my old Masters programme.

PERSONAL INSIGHTS:

• Motivation: My job is quite different in terms of what my day-to-day looks like, as one week I can be report writing, and the next I could be spending time across different parts of the country undertaking site visits from hard-hat roof tours to tours of Cathedral crypts. I’m always learning and there are ample opportunities to satisfy my inner history geek within my role!
• Memorable Moments: Being published in the Museums Journal as part of the ongoing work I am doing towards gaining my AMA. A real pinch me moment.
• Future Vision: Since joining Focus, I’ve been very open and honest about my ambitions to continue to develop within the CREATE department. I would love to continue playing an integral role within my own team (and the wider Focus team, too) and foresee me eventually stepping up to a role like my colleague Fiona King. I would like to lead a team of graduates and consultants to continue the evolution of the company and the front-end work we do within my department. I would like to focus on developing our portfolio to provide more specialism in the areas of audience development and interpretation strategies, alongside continuing our legacy as strategical thinkers when it comes to business planning, feasibility studies and project management.
• Fun Fact: I used to work at Alton Towers theme park as a ride operator!
• Favourite Focus Day: I’d say participating in a boat trip on Rutland Water, where they discovered the fossilised remains of a 180-million-year-old ichthyosaur (sea dragon), was a very exciting day “in the office”.
• Why I love working at Focus: My job enables me to maintain a healthy work / life balance that ultimately contributes to my continued enjoyment and motivation to do what I do every day. My colleagues are all incredibly hard-working, kind and fun people, and this working environment naturally lends itself to being something you want to be a part of. When I first joined Focus as a Graduate, I had a gut feeling this was the place for me to develop my professional skills and interest, and here I am nearly five years later as a Consultant!
