There’s no single route into a career in energy and sustainability—many professionals begin with degrees in engineering, environmental science, or building services, while others enter through specialist courses or apprenticeships. The growing demand for skilled sustainability professionals has also opened up new career pathways for those working in related fields such as construction, facilities management, or surveying.

If you’re interested in working within this sector below are some steps to help set you on the right path:

• Gaining relevant qualifications:
• Students interested in Energy Assessment can pursue qualifications such as the Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) or Non-Domestic Energy Assessor (NDEA), often accredited by Elmhurst Energy.
• Those interested in retrofit can train as Retrofit Assessors or Retrofit Coordinators, with The Retrofit Academy being a key organisation for training and resources.
• For broader sustainability consultancy careers, degrees in Environmental Science, Sustainable Construction, or Energy Management are valuable.
• Professional bodies like IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) and SocEnv (Society for the Environment) can provide routes to professional chartered membership.
