It has been an interesting few weeks in terms of buzz surrounding environmental considerations: COP27 was held in Sharm el-Sheikh, ending with an agreement to strengthen commitment to the 1.5C limit (despite some calls to abolish the ‘ratchet’). Sadly, the resolution to have emissions peak in 2025 was dropped – very disappointing news; as was the lack of commitment to phase down all fossil fuels, as hoped. Provision to boost “low-emissions energy” is not necessarily all it seems,  as it does not only include ‘clean’, renewable energy sources.

Closer to home, I had the opportunity to attend the East Midlands Chamber Energy Summit 2022. I felt genuinely buoyed by the positive atmosphere of like-minded local business representatives (across manufacturing, consulting, education, local government and more) all keen to play their part in placing our region at the forefront of sustainable business practice both UK wide and globally. Well, what would you expect from UK Chamber of the Year?

Excellent speakers and exhibitors facilitated conversations surrounding new technology, improved practices, Government strategy and the difficulties faced in reducing your carbon footprint – covering business operations and for us, meeting clients’ needs. Particularly interesting conversations were those with the University of Nottingham surrounding sustainability education – a subject close to Focus’ heart. In construction, educating the industry is vital in embedding sustainability practice into every build.

Additionally, on a company level, we have been engaging with the Supply Chain Sustainability School again to undergo assessment and boost our membership level to Silver. This membership is a great source of learning materials, for anyone who wants to fill those knowledge gaps in bite size chunks. Joining is free and simple – do take a look!
