Until now, no single, industry‑wide methodology existed; Version 1 introduces unified rules, shared definitions and robust technical requirements that strengthen the credibility of net zero claims across the built environment.

Developed through extensive collaboration between CIBSE, BBP, BRE, the Carbon Trust, IStructE, LETI, RIBA, RICS and UKGBC, the Standard builds on insights from more than 200 pilot projects, resulting in refined limits, improved guidance and new annexes that support real‑world application across both new build and existing assets. A formal verification process, administered initially by Bureau Veritas, further strengthens accountability and ensures net zero carbon alignment is backed by measurable evidence.
