Recently, Operations Manager, Sonja Greenhow joined local residents to support Leicester City Council in restoring the Saffron Brook tree plantation—part of a continued commitment to improving public green spaces and biodiversity in the city.

Working together in persistent drizzle, as we have come to accept during the school summer holidays, our group of mixed-aged volunteers (ranging from 30–60) replaced the protective sleeves and posts, removed encroaching vegetation, and applied fresh woodchip mulch to help suppress weeds and retain moisture.

Despite the weather, the atmosphere was incredibly positive. The team were not only honouring a maintenance agreement between the Council and The Woodland Trust under the MOREwoods scheme, but also helping protect native species like beech, oak, blackthorn and field maple.

Beyond the project’s environmental benefits, the day offered a great chance to build skills, foster teamwork, and reconnect with nature. Spontaneous thanks from passing park-goers highlighted just how valued this space—and the volunteers helping to maintain it—really are.

This activity formed part of Focus’ annual Volunteering Scheme, which gives every team member a day to contribute to a cause that matters to them. Whether it’s supporting biodiversity, helping young people, or giving back to a local community—there are so many ways to make a difference.
