Focus are applauding the recent launch of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard Technical Update which sets out clear metrics within the built environment to achieve net zero carbon goals such as delivering a Net Zero Carbon UK by 2050 and a 78% reduction in carbon emissions by 2035.

Focus’ pro-active involvement in upskilling the industry and our long-held belief that we need to work to the same NZC definitions and agreed targets are reflected in the standard’s main principles of providing clear definitions and trajectories as well as driving market transformation through industry engagement.

The Standard will aim to prioritise energy efficiency, eliminating the performance gap in buildings and encouraging the reuse of existing buildings assets, will adopt a whole-life carbon approach that includes both operational and embodied carbon considerations, something we at Focus have been huge advocates of for some time.

Following the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard’s call for evidence in January, Focus were able to submit embodied carbon data from across nine of our projects. We are encouraged to see that in setting out specific requirements in defining what is needed for a net zero carbon building, the Technical Update includes setting limits for upfront embodied carbon and reporting of lifecycle embodied carbon emissions both of which need to be regulated and adopted industry-wide to ensure success.

The Technical Update outlines requirements within each of the following areas to define what is needed for a NZC building:

• Operational Energy Limits
• Upfront Embodied Carbon
• Lifecycle embodied carbon emissions
• Fossil fuel-free on-site plant in new buildings
• Demand management
• On-site renewables
• Renewable procurement and offsetting
• Refrigerant emissions and leakage

The Technical Update emphasises how The Standard will play a significant role in achieving the net zero carbon goals in the UK’s built environment through a comprehensive framework that promotes sustainability, energy efficiency, and the reduction of carbon emissions in the UK built environment. With a focus on clear definitions, market transformation, and achievable yet stretching requirements, the Standard will provide a robust framework for guiding the construction and operation of buildings with minimal carbon emissions.
