Focus is proud to have been appointed as master planners, in partnership with Sigma Architects, for the Chesterfield Canal Corridor Regeneration Project. This ambitious initiative aims to unlock the canal’s potential as a vibrant space where communities can thrive, businesses can grow, and visitors can explore.

The masterplan was officially launched at an event in Killamarsh, attended by local politicians, council officers, business leaders, canal enthusiasts, and journalists. During the event, the Chesterfield Canal Trust outlined its vision for how the canal corridor can support new homes, employment, tourism, and biodiversity, all while enhancing the health and wellbeing of local residents. The vision is for a multifunctional corridor that supports employment, attracts tourism, promotes active travel, and fosters biodiversity. In addition to restoring the waterway, the project will introduce new cycling and walking routes, enhance paddlesport access, and create hubs for business and community activities.

In order to inform the masterplan, Focus and Sigma worked together to produce two key reports. The Strategic Outline Case, covering the entire corridor between Chesterfield and Kiveton Park, sets the stage for future investment and development. The more detailed Outline Business Case focused on the section within North East Derbyshire District Council’s boundary. Both documents explore the strategic, economic, and environmental benefits of a fully restored canal and provide the necessary framework for its successful delivery.

A key component of the masterplan is the identification of 18 hubs along the canal, each offering unique development opportunities. These hubs will host a range of attractions, from tourism and heritage sites to green spaces and community facilities.

The collaborative approach to the masterplan, shaped through consultations with stakeholders, including local authorities, community groups, environmental organisations, businesses, and canal users, ensures that both the canal’s needs and the aspirations of those who rely on the corridor are met.

The regeneration of the canal will deliver significant economic impacts, increasing visitor expenditure, arts and heritage engagement, and the creation of new jobs. Beyond these measurable benefits, the project will also improve users’ health and wellbeing and enhance local biodiversity.
