M by Montcalm is a 23-storey hotel near Old Street tube station in Shoreditch, London designed by architects Squire and Partners and delivered in collaboration with executive architects 5 Plus.  The unusual building design was based on the proximity of the hotel to Moorfields Eye Hospital, which sits opposite it.  The facade is designed to “express the idea of the optical and the visual” and takes inspiration from the hypnotic, illusionary artwork of Bridget Riley.

Focus were appointed as BREEAM assessor on the construction of the 5* hotel in the heart of London, with spa facilities and an exclusive sky bar restaurant.  Focus provided advice and support during the assessment on how to achieve a final BREEAM Bespoke rating of “Excellent”.

Manipulation and modulation of light, both internally and externally, gave the facade richness and an ever-changing face on this prominent site, as well as assisting solar performance to create a sustainable development.
