Built in 1701, it was one of the first erected in England after the resettlement of 1656, with its intact Wren-style furnishings, no other in Europe has this continuity of practice, of community, of building, or of collections.
Focus were appointed as Quantity Surveyor from concept to completion, for the conservation of the synagogue through level access, rebuilding the glazed annex to create a café and welcome area, developing the undercroft for an exhibition of the Sephardi artefacts, and refurbishing the community meeting room and toilets. Focus are overseeing both the base build and the interpretation.
This National Lottery Heritage Fund funded £5 million project aims to make the Synagogue more accessible to the public, improving the visitor experience and their understanding of the S&P Sephardi community and building. A new exhibition will be housed on a lower level, a flexible space created for events and schools, an improved entrance area and restoration works to the Synagogue.
