Focus is delighted to celebrate the reopening of Hull Maritime Museum, marking a major milestone in the delivery of the wider Hull Maritime project. Funded by Hull City Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the heritage-led regeneration initiative has been designed to safeguard and celebrate Hull’s maritime heritage while creating new cultural, educational and visitor opportunities across the city.

As NEC Project Manager and Contract Administrator, Focus is proud to have supported Hull City Council throughout the delivery of this landmark project providing key support across several major project elements, including the decanting of the museum’s collections and procurement support. Working closely with the wider project team, Focus helped support the successful delivery of complex conservation, refurbishment and regeneration works.

The Hull Maritime project has delivered improvements across the city’s key maritime assets, including:

• The conservation and refurbishment of the Grade II* listed Hull Maritime Museum, including structural alterations and new building services installations.
• The refurbishment and reconfiguration of Dock Office Chambers to create a specialist collections, research and conservation facility.
• The development of the North End Shipyard Visitor Centre alongside conservation of the historic Scotch Derrick Crane and permanent dry-berthing arrangements for the Arctic Corsair.
• Public realm improvements to Queen’s Gardens, creating an important connection between key maritime destinations within the city centre.

Building on the momentum created by Hull’s year as UK City of Culture in 2017, the project represents a significant investment in the city’s cultural infrastructure and visitor economy. As well as preserving nationally important heritage assets, it will create lasting opportunities for learning, tourism, research and community engagement for future generations.

The reopening of Hull Maritime Museum re-establishes the museum as a key cultural destination. The restored building will provide enhanced public access to Hull’s maritime heritage, supporting tourism, education and community engagement while ensuring these important stories can continue to be shared for generations to come.
