Focus were appointed project manager for the high profile Great Expectations redevelopment to establish the Charles Dickens Museum as Britain’s most accessible and inspirational literary house museum. It has increased the available display space and introduced new state-of-the-art display and storage facilities to protect the collections for the enjoyment and education of future generations.
In an adjacent property, the museum has opened a new visitor centre with study facilities and teaching rooms as well as climate-controlled spaces for the National Dickens Library and Archive. A purpose built rear extension accommodates WC facilities and a new accessible lift, providing step-free access into Dickens’ original house. Connections between the two properties have been created at basement, first and second floor level. This enables visitors to move from the present day to the Victorian past to engage with how Dickens would have lived.
The project was the recipient of National Lottery Heritage Fund funding.
