The wider pavements and new crossing points make the street more people-friendly whilst maintaining access for buses, taxis, loading vehicles and blue badge holders. High quality surfaces on the pavements, crossings and the new public space attract shoppers and tourists, encouraging them to relax and spend time there.
Focus were appointed for the two phases of the development with the high quality of the first phase works receiving praise from the local community and Council during the Jubilee and Olympics.
Key elements of the project included a mix of hard and soft landscaping, drainage improvements, street lighting and the like, all in the context of an historically important building. Specially commissioned engraving to stone benches provided a unique local point of interest. Access to the high street shops and offices was maintained throughout the works.
