The Spanish Museum is of national and international importance as it houses the UK’s largest collection of Spanish art outside London, and is the first museum in the UK dedicated to the genre. Two vacant buildings steeped in historical and local significance have been transformed into a striking gallery including restoration works to the roofs, masonry, front elevation and windows. The former bank and school overlooking the Market Place now comprises 10 new exhibition areas spread over three floors, displaying a wide range of paintings with particular emphasis on the 16th and 17th century – the ‘Golden Age’ of Spanish art – plus a learning centre, restaurant and a gift shop. The second floor presents In the Blink of an Eye by internationally renowned creative producers, Factum Arte.
As part of a wider appointment that also included Auckland Castle fit-out and Faith Museum works, Focus were appointed to provide strategic advice, programme management, contract administration and cost management services for both gallery and non-gallery fit-out of the Spanish Gallery. Focus also represented the client team in the coordination between fit-out and base build.
