The National Lottery Heritage Funded Transforming D-Day Museum project ended with the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Normandy Landings in 2019.
The works included a refurbished façade and visitor entrance; a new build element to create a corridor to connect existing buildings; relocation of the café/servery with external decking and landscaping fit-out; creation of a dedicated learning space; remodelling / refurbishment of all the gallery spaces, install new interpretative displays, exhibition build and general fit-out; reducing environmental impacts; a new website and rebrand; external works upgrade; external fabric repairs; hard and soft landscaping.
The scale and importance of the story has been conveyed combining the latest display technology with the museum’s unique collections – including the iconic landing craft and magnificent Overlord Embroidery which will feature prominently. The personal experiences of those who took part – both on the frontline and home front – are at the heart of the new displays.
The project was delivered on programme and on budget.
